AMATERASU

On the day of the summer solstice, as I was preparing to change my company name and concept to create a new worldview, an image inspired by the god of the sun came to me.

In Japan, the deity who rules the sun is called Amaterasu-ōmikami.

This is recorded in the Kojiki, Japan’s oldest book.

According to the text, Amaterasu’s younger brother ran amok, causing her to feel fear and anger, so she withdrew into the Ama-no-Iwato (a cave made of rock).

As a result, the sun disappeared, plunging the world into darkness and bringing about many disasters.

The distressed gods pooled their wisdom and began a grand festival in front of the rock cave.

Amaterasu, drawn by the commotion outside, opened the cave door, and another god—known for his great strength—forced it wide open, restoring the light.

That is the story.

“The Sun Has Returned”

For me—having finally found the path I had been seeking through my many years of artistic practice—this was a story I could deeply relate to.

I created this work with that sentiment in mind.
